How often should I wash my hair?

The eternal question we get asked is this -How often should I wash my hair? The simple answer is, you should wash your hair as often as you like! But if you wanted a little more information, I can help.

How much is too much?

To be frank, there is no such thing as too much hair washing! If you want to wash your hair every single day, go for it! There is nothing wrong with frequent hair washing, as long as you are using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair needs.

If you have a vibrant colour, or have curly hair however, it might be better to wash less. Curls tendency towards dryness can be exacerbated with everyday washing, so some natural oils are preferable in this case. With vibrant colours, everyday washing can fade your colour faster so less often is better for your colour upkeep.

How often is not enough?

Well, this is a tricker one. My rule of thumb is no more than a week between washes. For most people at this point, the scalp will become itchy and irritated from product build up, dirt and oil, and may even start to smell a little less than fresh. Not ideal in my book! But if you are one of the few that can go longer, that is entirely up to you. Your hair, your choice!  Just make sure to brush your hair well before washing to loosen up the build up on the hair and scalp to best remove it and start again. It also makes it easier to detangle.

How often is just right?

Well goldilocks, that is up to you! Each head of hair is so different, there is no hard and fast rule for washing. Fine hair, thinning hair oily, or sensitive scalps may benefit from more frequent washing to stimulate the scalp and create a healthy space for hair to grow. Plus, clean hair can just feel nice!

Curly, coarse, dry or chemically treated hair or those with vibrant colours may choose to was less frequently to maintain moisture, reduce frizz and protect their colour. All I ask is that you get advice from your friendly neighbourhood hairdresser about what products are right for you and wash to your hearts content.

Please, please just come to your appointment with reasonably clean hair. 10 day old unwashed hair is never a pleasant experience, as much as we love you….
